Science + Faith

Some atheists have claimed that modern science is not a friend to religious faith. Sadly, some Christians have claimed the same thing. Instead of science being at odds with our faith, we believe it needs to be an important part of how we understand God and God's creation, including ourselves. The sites listed below generally have both a high view of scripture and a high view of science. While some disagree with how we should interpret the scientific data or how we should interpret scripture, all agree that scientific investigation is important. This site doesn't necessarily agree with all the views expressed at the sites listed below, but we think they are all valuable resources to understanding the faith/science discussion.

Websites

American Scientific Affiliation - The American Scientific Affiliation (ASA) is a fellowship of men and women of science and disciplines that can relate to science who share a common fidelity to the Word of God and a commitment to integrity in the practice of science. Lots of great resources here. Members do not hold a specific view on creation or evolution, however most articles tend to support either old earth creationism (including ID) or theistic evolution.

Azusa Pacific's Center for Research in Science - Azusa Pacific University is an Evangelical Christian university. The Center for Research in Science (CRIS) exists to serve a community of students, scholars, and laypersons by promoting research that encompasses the scope of scientific studies and addresses the inseparable relationship between science and culture, its role in classical liberal arts education, and the ancient dialogue between faith and reason. The link brings you to Archived Lectures and Presentations. There are quite a few video lectures to watch from various Christian points of view.

The Biologos Foundation - Established by Dr. Francis Collins, BioLogos presents a case for a compatibility of evolution and Christian faith. BioLogos.org features responses to a myriad of questions received by Collins, author of "The Language of God", Karl Giberson, author of "Saving Darwin", and Darrel Falk, author of "Coming to Peace With Science" since the publication of their books.

Christians in Science - British sister organization of ASA. CiS is an international network of those concerned with the relationship between science and Christian faith, open to scientists, teachers, students and all those with an interest in this dialog. Evangelical affiliated. Members do not hold a specific view on creation or evolution, however most articles tend to support either old earth creationism (including ID) or theistic evolution.

Faith and Evolution - Started by the Center for Science and Culture at Discovery Institute, this site presents a case for intelligent design and argues against Darwinian evolution.

Intelligent Design.org - Site with lots of information and links supporting intelligent design.

LeaderU (Sciences) - Science page at LeaderU. LeaderU is run by Faculty Commons, the faculty ministry of Campus Crusade For Christ Intl,  and is a ResourceBASE containing more than 4,500 articles, reviews, research papers, essays, books and chapters, commentaries, video files, poems and more, all from a biblical worldview, written at the undergraduate to postgraduate levels. LeaderU provides a venue for professors to publish scholarly and popular-level resources in multiple disciplines from a decidedly biblical worldview.

Reasons to Believe - Started by astronomer Hugh Ross, Reasons to Believe promotes a semi-literal interpretation of Genesis 1-2, disagreeing with evolution, but supporting an old earth. Lots of resources here.

The Veritas Forum Talks - Science - Lectures/talks regarding science and faith that were sponsored by The Veritas Forum. Veritas Forums are university events that engage students and faculty in discussions about life's hardest questions and the relevance of Jesus Christ to all of life.

Books

The Edge of Evolution: The Search for the Limits of Darwinism - Now, in his long-awaited follow-up, Behe presents far more than a challenge to Darwinism: He presents the evidence of the genetics revolution -- the first direct evidence of nature's mutational pathways -- to radically redefine the debate about Darwinism.

The Genesis Debate : Three Views on the Days of Creation - J. Ligon Duncan III and David W. Hall defend the view that the Genesis creation days are six, sequential days, each 24 hours long (the 24-hour view). Hugh Ross and Gleason L. Archer defend the view that the Genesis creation days are six sequential ages of time of unspecified but finite duration (the day-age view). And Lee Irons with Meredith G. Kline defend the view that the Genesis creation days are presented as normal days, but that the picture of God's creating in six days and resting on the seventh is figurative (the Framework view)

The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief - Collins's faith in God has been confirmed and enhanced by the revolutionary discoveries in biology that he has helped to oversee. He has absorbed the arguments for atheism of many scientists and pundits, and he can refute them. Darwinian evolution occurs, yet, as he explains, it cannot fully explain human nature -- evolution can and must be directed by God. He offers an inspiring tour of the human genome to show the miraculous nature of God's instruction book. Sure to be compared with C.S. Lewis's Mere Christianity, this is a stunning document, whether you are a believer, a seeker, or an atheist.

The Privileged Planet: How Our Place in the Cosmos is Designed for Discovery - Is Earth merely an insignificant speck in a vast and meaningless universe? On the contrary: The Privileged Planet shows that this cherished assumption of materialism is dead wrong. In this provocative book, Guillermo Gonzalez and Jay W. Richards present a staggering array of evidence that exposes the hollowness of this modern dogma. They demonstrate that our planet is exquisitely fit not only to support life, but also to give us the best view of the universe, as if Earth were designed both for life and for scientific discovery.

Science & Christianity: Four Views - Christians have long debated the relationship of science and faith. With the rise of Darwinism, however, the issue took on new significance. Darwinism appeared to undermine the authority of the Bible and the credibility of Christianity by freeing science of the need for a Creator. Rethinking the relationship between science and Christianity quickly became a priority. How does a faithful Christian respond to the pronouncements of contemporary science? Is science a help or a hindrance to belief? Are science and the Bible in conflict?

Signature in the Cell: DNA and the Evidence for Intelligent Design - Signature in the Cell is the first book to make a comprehensive case for intelligent design based upon DNA. Meyer embarks on an odyssey of discovery as he investigates current evolutionary theories and the evidence that ultimately led him to affirm intelligent design. Clearly defining what ID is and is not, Meyer shows that the argument for intelligent design is not based on ignorance or "giving up on science," but instead upon our growing scientific knowledge of the information stored in the cell.

Three Views on Creation and Evolution - The book presents the three main evangelical views: young earth creationism, old earth creationism, and theistic evolution. The contributors are all authorities on their respective views. Each essay is followed by responses from a theologian, a biblical studies scholar, a philosopher, and a scientist; and the entire discussion is summarized by Philip Johnson and Richard Bube.
